LONDON, 23 Jan. (UPI) — Last year I wrote an op-ed on Iran’s bloody “war on drugs,” which has led to hundreds of executions and sent thousands to death row.

I criticized the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime and Western countries as they continued to finance a controversial drug control program in an attempt to tackle illicit drug trade on a key route, which goes through Afghanistan, Iran, the Middle East and Europe. (more…)

Iran has carried out a total of 40 executions since the beginning of 2014, with at least 33 carried out in the past week alone, said Amnesty International today.

“The spike in the number of executions carried out so far this month in Iran is alarming. The Iranian authorities’ attempts to change their international image are meaningless if at the same time executions continue to increase”, said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.  (more…)

GENEVA, December 10 (UNHCR) –The UN refugee agency and the World Food Programme will start airlifting aid from Iraq to north-eastern Syria this week, a timely move that will bring much-needed relief supplies for vulnerable people in an inaccessible area as the harsh winter sets in.

Starting Thursday, up to 12 cargo flights are expected to airlift food and relief supplies such as blankets, plastic sheets and sleeping mats from Erbil in northern Iraq to Hassakeh in Syria’s north-east, with the permission of both governments. (more…)

Iran’s bloody ‘war on drugs’ has led to hundreds of executions and thousands on death row. Yet the United Nations and the West continue to finance it.

Iran is one of the worst human rights violators in the world. Their inhumane policies are met with worldwide condemnation, as their judiciary ignores international standards and humanitarian law. Yet little attention is paid to the fact that the United Nations and Western governments have helped finance the regimes bloody “war on drugs”, accounting for an untold number of executions in a country which lacks proper rule of law or judicial oversight.
