UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. General Assembly has approved a resolution criticizing Iran for serious rights violations including torture and its “alarming” and frequent use of the death penalty.

The vote Wednesday was 86 to 36, with 61 countries abstaining.The resolution also welcomes pledges by Iran’s new president, Hassan Rouhani, on some important human rights issues such as eliminating discrimination against women and members of ethnic minorities. (more…)

GENEVA, December 10 (UNHCR) –The UN refugee agency and the World Food Programme will start airlifting aid from Iraq to north-eastern Syria this week, a timely move that will bring much-needed relief supplies for vulnerable people in an inaccessible area as the harsh winter sets in.

Starting Thursday, up to 12 cargo flights are expected to airlift food and relief supplies such as blankets, plastic sheets and sleeping mats from Erbil in northern Iraq to Hassakeh in Syria’s north-east, with the permission of both governments. (more…)

Geneva (9 December 2013)- A group of independent United Nations human rights experts today called on the Iraqi Government to clarify the whereabouts of seven residents of Camp Ashraf, who were allegedly abducted last September after an attack that left 52 people dead, guarantee their safety and prevent their extradition to Iran.

More than 3,000 Iranian exiles – many of them members of a group known as the People’s Mojahedeen of Iran – have been based at the Ashraf refugee camp near Baghdad since the 1980s.

Iran’s bloody ‘war on drugs’ has led to hundreds of executions and thousands on death row. Yet the United Nations and the West continue to finance it.

Iran is one of the worst human rights violators in the world. Their inhumane policies are met with worldwide condemnation, as their judiciary ignores international standards and humanitarian law. Yet little attention is paid to the fact that the United Nations and Western governments have helped finance the regimes bloody “war on drugs”, accounting for an untold number of executions in a country which lacks proper rule of law or judicial oversight.
