Amnesty International – A witness confirmed to Amnesty International that the flogging of Saudi Arabian activist Raif Badawi took place this morning after Friday prayers in front of al-Jafali mosque in Jeddah.

“The flogging of Raif Badawi is a vicious act of cruelty which is prohibited under international law,” said Said Boumedouha, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa. (more…)

United Nations

AP – The U.N. General Assembly on Thursday approved resolutions criticizing the human rights situations of North Korea, Iran and Syria.

North Korea has been outraged by the resolution that urges the U.N. Security Council to refer the country’s human rights situation to the International Criminal Court. The council will meet for the first time Monday on North Korea’s human rights violations. (more…)

At least 60 people reportedly dead after regime forces drop bombs on Idlib camp housing people displaced by fighting (ALJAZEERA).

ALJAZEERA – At least 60 people have been killed and dozens injured, activists say, after a Syrian government helicopter dropped two barrel bombs on a camp for people displaced by fighting in the country’s north, charring some bodies beyond recognition.

The bombs were dropped on a camp near al-Habeet in the northern province of Idlib on Wednesday, mostly killing women and children at the camp, an activist told Al Jazeera. (more…)

U.N. News – Senior officials from the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) warned today that an “immense” humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Iraq and called for greater resources from the international community to help with the upcoming winter season, as they concluded a four-day mission to conflict-riven areas in the country. London, MEFD –  The latest report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ahmed Shaheed, has been released. ReyhanehWe have been informed that the Iranian authorities have executed Reyhaneh Jabbari in the city of Karaj this morning. Ms Jabbari’s mother, Shole Pakravan, confirmed her death to BBC Persian. According to The Independent newspaper, Ms Pakravan told BBC Persian that her 26-year-old daughter was hanged in a Tehran prison and that she was due to see her daughter’s body at the cemetery today. JabbariAmnesty International – The Iranian authorities must stop the execution of a woman due to be hanged tomorrow morning after being convicted for the killing of a man whom she said tried to sexually abuse her, said Amnesty International.

Reyhaneh Jabbari was sentenced to death in 2009 after a deeply flawed investigation and trial. Her execution was due to be carried out on 30 September but was postponed for 10 days. (more…)
