London, MEFD – In an effort to garner international attention for the case of Iranian spiritual teacher Mohammad Ali Taheri, Middle East Forum for Development (MEFD) drafted a letter addressed to Ms Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission (HRVP), in which it expresses its extreme concern about the fate and whereabouts of Mr Ali Taheri. Read our statement for further background information.   The letter was drafted on 22nd November 2016 by the Executive Director of MEFD, Mr Mosa Zahed, and can be seen below. On 20th December 2016, the Head of the Iran Task Force of the European External Action Service, Mr Hugo Sobral, responded to MEFD’s letter in which it highlighted that “the EU has again raised the case of Mr Taheri and asked the Iranian authorities to provide him with adequate medical care” on the basis of information provided by MEFD.   The response letter can be seen here   Subsequent to the efforts of the EU, MEFD received news from the Taheri family that on Monday 2nd January 2017, an official from the judiciary visited Mr Taheri in prison and promised him that his case would be reviewed as soon as possible. The official further asked Mr Taheri to end his hunger strike and to contact his family in order to inform them about these developments. Mr Taheri subsequently established contact with his family and told them that he had temporarily ended his hunger strike.   Middle East Forum for Development will steadfastly continue its campaign in order to secure the immediate and unconditional release of Mr Mohammad Ali Taheri.
